'I love u tom bear, nearly at the beginning of our 2 month adventure together'

the train ride there is the best bit. train rides are easy. they're an in-between place in which they don't have to talk much. silence and staring is allowed. it's part of it. what's outside the window is the focus. there are mountains. mountains are big and demand attention.

in the hostel, on the first night, they have their first conversation in months. in england they spoke all the time, in that there was speaking... short sentences sent over the tops of white laptop lids and there was laughter... bouncing off screens and at the expense of all these digital people they've sort of maybe met. there was physical contact... the brush of thumbs as coffee cups transferred... there was warmth... from in-laws funded under-floor heating...

they try the things the guide books say. in a temple she gets an urge to grab his arm and squeeze it. he thinks about telling her she shouldn't have given up dancing.

walking down tree-lined streets, they have never been so aware of how long two months is. they promise that the next time they go on holiday, they will take the internet with them.
